Insomnia associated with chronic pain: Gayle, 41, librarian, de facto relationship.

Problem: Began 7 years ago when she damaged her shoulder. Shoulder is still painful
much of the time. Has tried various medications (but they have unpleasant side-effects),
hot milk, and cursing and swearing. Does not expect that the program will help.

Before: Takes an hour or so to fall asleep. Wakes 2 or 3 times at night, and stays
awake for an hour or so each time. Sleeps about 4 hours. Tired during the day.

After: Shoulder is still painful, but sleep is a lot better. Now falling asleep in
15-20 minutes. Wakes 1-2 times on most nights, but goes back to sleep within 15-20 minutes.
Sleeping about 6-7 hours on most nights. Realising that even with chronic pain she might
hope for some improvement in her sleep seems to have been helpful, and also going to bed later.
